![]() ![]() The recordsįigure 1 below shows the results of my research into the 24-hour snowfall records for each state. The most recent state 24-hour snowfall record is 36.0” at Ansonia, Connecticut during the big blizzard of February 8-9, 2013 (Hamden reported an unofficial 40.0” in 24-hours during this storm). Rose Ski Resort reported a monthly total of 295.0”. The previous month (January 2017) was the snowiest month on record for anywhere in Nevada when the Mt. However, the originally reported storm total of 65.1” for December 24-27, 2017, and monthly total of 121.3”-which would have been state records-were later corrected, after the State Climate Extremes Committee (SCEC) found issues in snow-total reporting and snowboard placement that appear to have inflated the totals (see the initial SCEC findings).Įarlier that year Chimney Pond, Maine, established a state record for greatest depth of snow when 94.0” was measured on February 16, 2017. The winter of 2017-2018 saw Erie, Pennsylvania set city snowfall records for the season (166.0”), the month of December (93.8”), and any 24-hour period (32.6”). Unlike the state precipitation records, there have been no state snowfall records established since 2017 of which I’m aware. had snow cover on December 2, the largest percentage in NOAA records dating back to 2003. The snow cover of 22” at Duluth, Minnesota, on December 1 tied with 1985 for the largest on record there on the first day of meteorological winter (period of record 1884-). Madison’s seasonal normal is 50.9” and record was 101.4” in 2007-2008. Madison, Wisconsin experienced its snowiest start on record (period of record 1884-), with 15.7” of snowfall observed at Truax Airport through November 23. The 2019-2020 snow season has already gotten off to a big start in portions of the Upper Great Lakes region. This month I tackle a similar topic: state snowfall extremes. In late October, I posted a Category 6 entry about U.S. Image credit: Courtesy Jourdan Lagace, via. The storm total of 65.1” was the greatest single-storm snowfall for the state of Pennsylvania ever measured. Then plan on windy and colder weather Friday night into Saturday.Īnother First Alert Weather Day is possible next Monday for more snow.Above: A resident of Erie, Pennsylvania digs his driveway out during the record snowstorm of December 24-27, 2017. It should be warm enough in Denver that any light precipitation that reaches the metro area would be rain instead of snow. ![]() Then another storm system will race across the state on Friday brining snow back to the mountains. Some mountain towns could end up being warmer than Denver by a few degrees. The very cold morning on Wednesday will make it difficult to warm up much in the afternoon but most areas will at least reach freezing thanks to ample sunshine. Some neighborhoods along the Front Range may have the coldest night of the season so far. Skies should gradually clear in the afternoon but temperatures will remain bitterly cold.Īfter sunset, the combination of clear skies, light winds, and fresh snow on the ground will cause temperatures to drop into the frigid category. That brings total snowfall for November up to 10.9 inches which is 3.5 inches above normal.Īny additional snow accumulation on Tuesday will be minor and will mostly happen before 12 p.m. Meanwhile, Denver's official snow total at the airport (DIA) was 1.7 inch as of early morning. Generally speaking, the highest snow totals were in Boulder, Larimer, and Weld Counties. That is common with a "banded" snow storm. Most areas experienced 2-4 inches of snow but some locations measured less while others had more. A First Alert Weather Day continues through Tuesday evening.Īs expected, several waves of moderate and heavy snow moved over the Denver, Boulder, and Fort Collins areas before sunrise on Tuesday. The latest winter storm to hit Colorado has brought a wide range of snow totals but universal cold. ![]()
